Desert Home

Client: Private Residence, Lyons, CO

This home, located in a dry, rugged Colorado landscape, brings to mind images of the science fiction classic, "Dune".  By burrowing into the south slope, the home integrates into the hillside so that the three-story vertical is absorbed into the land.  The lower floor spills out to grade for inside / outside living.  The top floor is a couple’s retreat, with sounds of the adjacent river and distant views of Long's Peak providing an ethereal realm for dreaming.  The high mass passive solar design uses perform wall for high insulation while the corrugated cor-ten rusted metal roof marries the house to the Lyons red rockscape.
