Desert Home

Lyons, Colorado

This home, located in a dry, rugged Colorado landscape, brings to mind images of the science fiction classic, “Dune”. Burrowing into the south slope, the home’s integration into the hillside allows for the three-story vertical to be absorbed into the land. The lower floor spills out to grade for inside / outside living. The top floor is a couple’s retreat, with sounds of the adjacent river and distant views of Long’s Peak providing an ethereal realm for dreaming. The high-mass passive solar design uses Performwall for high insulation while the corrugated Cor-ten rusted metal roof marries the house to the Lyons red rockscape.
