Solar Bungalow

Boulder, Colorado

Nestled into a historic district in Boulder, this home integrates into the existing fabric of the traditional neighborhood homes, while responding to extremely tight physical constraints due to the narrow sloping lot, height, setback and solar shading restrictions required by the City Planning Department. Using familiar building forms and materials - such as battered brick walls and deep porches - slightly different ways, while carefully arranging the interior spaces allows a comfortably livable new home to be built in the heart of the city. Louvered shutters control solar gain, while a solar array mounted on the detached garage/studio provides for about 1/2 of the home’s energy use.

Inside, a traditional “house of rooms” is updated with crisp casing, an uncluttered material palette, modern cabinetry & hardware, and clean detailing in the kitchen & baths.
